About HeronCalc

Free financial calculators that respect your time, your intelligence, and your screen real estate — plus premium AI tools for when you need deeper analysis.

Why this exists

I needed a mortgage calculator. The first three results on Google were bloated with pop-ups, required an email to see results, or showed me numbers that didn't match what my lender quoted. One site loaded 47 ad scripts before the calculator even rendered.

So I built my own. Then I built another. Then a few more. HeronCalc is what happened when frustration met a free weekend and a stubborn belief that financial tools should actually work.

Every calculator on this site is free, requires no signup, and gives you real numbers — not vague ranges designed to funnel you into a sales pitch. The math is transparent. The inputs are yours. The results are instant.

What we believe

You shouldn't need an account to do math. No calculator on HeronCalc will ever require a login, an email address, or a phone number. You came here to calculate something. That's exactly what you'll do.

Accuracy matters more than simplicity. Our mortgage calculator pulls live interest rates from the Federal Reserve. Our tax calculator uses current IRS brackets, FICA caps, and real credit phase-outs. We'd rather show you a complete picture with an extra input field than give you a pretty number that's wrong.

Free tools should be genuinely useful. Our free calculators aren't watered-down demos for a paid product. They're complete, powerful tools that handle real-world scenarios. Premium AI features exist for people who want deeper analysis, but the calculators themselves will always be free and fully functional.

Ads shouldn't break the tool. We run display ads to keep the site free, but they'll never shift your layout, interrupt your calculation, or autoplay video over your results. The calculator comes first. Always.

How it's built

HeronCalc runs on Next.js with server-side rendering for fast page loads and strong SEO. Every calculator is a custom-built React component — no off-the-shelf widgets or iframe embeds. The calculations happen in your browser in real time, with no data sent to any server.

Charts are rendered with Chart.js to keep the DOM lightweight and interactions responsive. The mortgage calculator integrates with the FRED API (Federal Reserve Economic Data) to display current market rates instead of stale defaults. Tax data is updated annually when the IRS publishes new brackets and thresholds.

Our premium AI tools use advanced language models to analyze your financial data and generate personalized insights. All AI processing happens through secure API calls — your data is used only for your analysis, never stored on our servers, and never used to train AI models.

The site is hosted on a DigitalOcean server with Cloudflare for CDN and DDoS protection. Total infrastructure cost is under $10/month. No bloated enterprise stack, no unnecessary dependencies, no tracking pixels watching your every keystroke.

How we make money

Transparency matters, especially on a finance site. Here's how HeronCalc sustains itself:

Premium AI tools. We offer AI-powered analysis tools that go beyond what a calculator can do — think personalized P&L analysis, cash flow forecasting, and deal underwriting. These are one-time purchases with lifetime access. No subscriptions, no recurring charges. The free calculators remain free forever — premium tools are a separate upgrade for people who need deeper, AI-driven insights.

Affiliate partnerships. When we recommend or link to financial products — like mortgage lenders, savings accounts, or credit cards — some of those links are affiliate links. If you click one and sign up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These links are always clearly marked, and we never let affiliate relationships influence our calculator results or editorial recommendations.

Display advertising. We run display ads through ad networks to help cover costs and keep every calculator free. Ad placements are chosen carefully to avoid layout shift, intrusive interruptions, or anything that degrades the calculator experience.

What we don't do. We don't sell your data. We don't gate calculator features behind a paywall. We don't manipulate calculator results to favor any product or provider. The numbers are the numbers.

What's next

HeronCalc is actively growing. New calculators, educational guides, and premium AI tools are in development. On the calculator side, home affordability, credit card payoff, auto loan, and student loan calculators are coming next.

On the AI side, we're building tools that turn raw financial data into actionable analysis — the kind of insight that normally requires a financial advisor or hours with a spreadsheet. Each AI tool pairs with a free calculator, so you can start with the basics and upgrade to deeper analysis only if you need it.

This started as a side project to scratch my own itch. The goal is simple: build the best financial calculator site on the internet. No venture capital. No growth-at-all-costs playbook. Just useful tools that get better over time.

Why “Heron”?

Herons are patient. They stand still, watch the water, and strike at exactly the right moment. Good financial decisions work the same way — observe, plan, act with precision. Also, it was the best domain name available for under $12.
